Summer English Lesson II. Comparative and Superlative

Hi students,

Welcome to today’s lesson. We’re going to talk about comparative and superlative. So let’s get into work.

• We use comparative adjectives to compare two things or people.
• We add -er to short adjectives and the word “more” to long adjectives.

We form comparatives as follows.

short adjective                                comparative

tall                                                          taller

high                                                        higher

long                                                        longer

long adjective                                     comparative

difficult                                              more difficult

interesting                                       more interesting

important                                         more important

We use the word “than” when comparing to other things or people.

e.g.

My sister is older than me.

Your car is more expensive than mine.

We use superlative to say that something or somebody is supreme or outstanding.

We add  the + -est to short adjectives and the words “the most” to long adjectives.

LONG ADJECTIVE                            SUPERLATIVE

understandable                           the most understandable

e.g   This is the most beautiful landscape I’ve ever seen.
